When John Saunders and Frank Lowy opened their first shopping centre called 'Westfield Place' in the suburbs of Sydney in 1959, it boasted 12 shops, two department stores and a supermarket.
Now 43 years later, the property developers are preparing to open the doors of Westfield Stratford City tomorrow - making it the largest urban shopping centre in Europe. This shiny mini-city of chrome and carrier bags contains 300 shops ranging from Primark to Prada within its 1.9million sq ft.
The retail behemoth is 'anchored' by a 240,000 sq ft John Lewis department store, a 32,000 sq ft Waitrose supermarket, and a 200,000 sq ft Marks & Spencer.
